The Salvation Army Collier County Accepts Christmas Assistance Applications

The Salvation Army of Collier County will accept Christmas assistance applications between October 7 and October 31. This year there are 2 locations with different dates:
•Immokalee, between October 7 and October 10 from 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. Apply in person to 210A South Street, Immokalee
Naples, between October 20 and October 31 from 9:00am and 3:00pm. On Friday, October 24 and October 31 application time is 5.00 pm to 7.00pm, NOT 9 to 3pm.

Applicants need to bring:
•Photo ID
•Social Security Card
•Proof of child’s age
•Proof of family income

This year all applicants must apply in person, no applications will be mailed to agencies.
The Salvation Army acts as a focal point for Christmas assistance applications so that holiday gifts are fairly distributed and duplication of services avoided.  Last holiday season over 10,000 individuals received holiday gifts, toys and food from The Salvation Army.  In November, over 500 families are expected to receive Thanksgiving food baskets.

Shakespeare's "Macbeth"


Shakespeare's "Macbeth" will be presented at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Fort Myers on Friday and Saturday, October 10 & 11 at 7:00pm, and Sunday, October 12 at 3:00pm.  There is no charge for admission, but a freewill offering will be taken to support the "Music and the Fine Arts Series at St. Luke's."  The church is located at 2635 Cleveland Ave, accross from Lee Memorial.  Parking is in the rear, and the church is Handicap accessable.  This is the second annual Shakespeare production for this series.

WALK FOR A WORTHY CAUSE

         
The Children's Network of Southwest Florida is holding its 3rd Annual Walk to Prevent Child Abuse on Saturday, October 11, at Pelican Preserve (in Fort Myers).  Registration/check-in begins at 7:30 am and the walk begins at 8:30 am. 
The walk is 5 kilometers (3.5 miles) and welcomes individuals and groups of walkers from all across Southwest Florida.  Last year's event had 500 walkers participating with over $72,000 in pledges raised.  All funds remain in the community and directly benefit local children who may be at risk for abuse and neglect.  All walkers - as individuals or as part of a group - are encouraged to collect at least $50 in pledges.  By doing so, they are eligible to receive a walker gift bag containing a t-shirt, prevention magnet, wristband, and other gifts; and earn a chance at the Grand Prize!  There's still time to register!  Simply call 239-226-1524 or send an e-mail to molsen@childnetswfl.org or amclaughlin@childnetswfl.org to receive instructions and a pledge sheet.  Walkers should register before October 3, however all money and pledge forms must be turned in by September 15 to receive a walker gift bag. FAY SCHOOL MAKEUP DAY SCHEDULED


Pending approval by the Collier County School Board, Friday, October 17, will be scheduled as the makeup day for the school day missed (August 19) because of Tropical Storm Fay.  The Board will vote during the September 18 Regular School Board Meeting.
October 17 was originally a Teacher Planning Day, a non-student day, on the 2008-09 school calendar.  A revised version of the calendar will be available once approved by the School Board.

Pilot Club of Fort Myers to Raise Funds for Brain-Related Injuries

 
 The Pilot Club of Fort Myers is raising money to increase public awareness of brain injuries – the most frequent cause of disability and death among children and adolescents in the United States. Saturday, Oct. 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Edison State College, the Pilot Club of Fort Myers is inviting the community to participate in their annual auction, an evening of food, raffles and unique auction items.           
The cost is $20 per person and includes heavy hors d’oeuvres, wine, assorted desserts and a margarita bar.

Dine Out Against Hunger

The News-Press/NBC-2/Clear Channel Dine Out Against Hunger is Saturday, October 25, 2008, in conjunction with USA Weekend's Make A Difference Day.
That's the day Southwest Floridians will patronize restaurants which in turn donate 20 percent of the day's food sales to The Harry Chapin Food Bank.   The Harry Chapin Food Bank serves 140 charities in the five county area, feeding over 20,000 people per month.According to Harry Chapin Executive Director Al Brisbain, most of the Harry Chapin Partner Agencies have experienced a significant increase in requests for food assistance – which can be attributed to the housing downturn and increased unemployment. The Harry Chapin Food Bank works in a cooperative effort with affiliated agencies to procure and distribute food and is able to distribute $5 worth of food for every operational dollar spent.
